While on vacation in Key West, Florida, you should make sure that you visit the pristine island oasis of Looe Key for a one-of-a-kind ecological adventure. Nature lovers especially enjoy discovering this hidden gem of the Florida Keys. This serene little isle is one of the best destinations in the region for snorkeling. This federally protected marine preserve is home to an extensive coral grove that is six hundred feet wide and two thousand four hundred feet long. Because this expanse of coral growth varies in depth, it is an amazing site for both scuba divers as well as snorkelers. This location also has quite a diverse array of different types of coral growth. The reef off Looe Key has a marvelous assortment of soft coral, hard coral, sponges, and large coral heads. This gorgeous ecosystem of coral reef has been thriving in this area for over seven thousand years. The temperate waters are carried from the equator by the Gulf Stream along the periphery of the Florida Keys. This constant infusion of warm water elevates the median water temperature around the reef, creating an ideal environment for live coral growth. Because of the unique water temperature conditions, the Florida Keys is home to the only living coral system on the east coast of North America.
You will witness an astonishing population of exotic species inhabiting this reef, including yellowtails, angel fish, sergeant majors, and morays. You will have the opportunity to visit two different areas of this teeming reef; each site has its own unique attractions. After building your appetite while snorkeling, you can enjoy a scrumptious buffet lunch that includes beverages.
