Located roughly 70 miles from Key West, Dry Tortugas National Park has become a popular destination for snorkeling. The park was named after the many sea turtles that are at home here and have survived even through phases of being seriously hunted. Dry Tortugas consists of seven islands and part of them are Garden Key and Fort Jefferson, built in the mid-1800s. While Fort Jefferson was initially built to guard shipping lanes, it was turned into a military prison during the Civil War. The rich history of Dry Tortugas is a vital part of this exciting day and will give you great insight into local military history.
And then there is the natural beauty of this protected area. Apart from the turtles the park was named after, Dry Tortugas features an abundance of wild and plant life. Take a walk and take in the natural diversity of this place. A real treat is also snorkeling in the crystal-clear water with its diverse underwater world and colorful tropical fish. Land or water, Dry Tortugas National Park is a destination you should not miss. There is something there for everyone.
